New Jets QB Aaron Rodgers made headlines this week by agreeing to a new reworked deal with the franchise. Rodgers agreed to take a pay cut, so that the Jets can have more financial flexibility. The 4 time League MVP agreed to a new reworked deal which will be two years for $ 75 million. The new contract also includes two player options to reduce the impact of the cap with his salary bonus currently being at $ 35 million. The Cal product will earn $1.8 on Sunday as well as his salary bonus. In 2024, his salary is set to be at $38.2 million. The Jets inherited his last contract with the Packers by trading for him. When Rodgers resigned with Green Bay last off-season, he was due to make almost $110 million in full guarantees.
Altogether, the 10 time Pro-Bowler will take a $35 million dollar pay cut in order for the Jets to make some more moves before the regular season begins. According to reports, the agreement with both sides had been in place for some time and was just waiting on the 39 year old QB`s signature.
NFL Network was the first to report the news of the new deal for Aaron Rodgers.
Why Rodgers took a pay cut:
Aaron Rodgers took a huge pay cut that many fans were shocked to see. Even though Rodgers remains one of the highest paid QB`s in the League, he is still giving a pretty big portion back to the Jets. Most likely the reason for Rodgers to give up this amount of money was because of one thing. That one name is 4 time Pro-Bowl RB Dalvin Cook. Cook is currently a free agent after the Vikings released him back in June. Cook is getting older, but he is still a top 10 RB when he is healthy. The last four seasons, the FSU product has rushed for over 1,000 yards and made the Pro-Bowl the last four seasons. He is also only 27 years old and still has some left in the tank. On top of that, Cook does not have to be relied on too much as the Jets have Breece Hall returning back from injury and they have Michael Carter as the other option if the ISU product is not good to go. Last season, Cook rushed for 1,173 yards on 264 attempts and 8 scores. The former second round pick averaged 4.4 yards per carry.
Rodgers could be doing this for other things as well and possibly for other players the Jets could sign. But it's most likely for the Jets to bring in the former Vikings RB Dalvin Cook. If the Jets would sign Cook, their offense would like like this: Aaron Rodgers at QB, Dalvin Cook at RB, Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard and Corey Davis at WR along with Taylor Cocklin at TE.
New place for an old face:
For the first time in his 19 year career, Rodgers will be in a different place. For the first 18 years of his career, Rodgers played for the Packers with 15 of those seasons being the starter and an All-Pro quarterback. From 2008 until 2022, Rodgers was one of the top QB’s in the League. He made 10 Pro-Bowls and was an All-Pro 5 times with 4 of them being on the first team. He also was on the second team once, won 4 League MVPS and of course won the Super Bowl in 2011. Despite last season being a down year by his standards, he threw for 26 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 91.1 passer rating and for the first time in his career he did not throw for 4,000 yards in a full season that he started. In his entire career, he has thrown 59,055 yards, 475 TDs, 105 INT’s, 103.6 passer rating and went 147-75-1 as the starter for the Packers.
